This makes sense considering how dependent the soft, open, low-soled Sagan are on warm weather. The Grand, however, is not a winter shoe to me. It's a dress shoe. The Grand has the same shape as the Sagan but is a smarter loafer. It can still be worn all year, however, it is still a slip-on with a slim, lightweight sole. Although the current model is Blake-stitched, the original sole was to be cemented (glued to) to the upper. This is enough background. The new Grand, pronounced English and not French, is competing in a larger market than the plain Sagan. There are many loafers on the market, available in a wide range of styles, leathers and shapes, as well as a variety of places where they were made. Are the Grand loafers sufficiently different from them? Is it as different as the Sagan from other Belgian loafers in its own right? Let's first look at the materials. It is more flexible than traditional shoemakers' leather. It is also more durable than traditional Italian loafers. The ones for orthopaedics often feel cheap and don't breathe well. They are usually made for dress shoes and are very slim. However, they last well and offer good support. Allan chose a supplier that seemed to combine aspects of each. The shoe's curved support and cushioning around the heel are definitely different to regular dress shoes. It's slim and breathable. This quality is what sets the Grand apart from other flexible loafers that are cheaper, such as the Italians and the more recent Harry's. This is an identical approach to the Sagan, where you take one type of shoe (here the comfortable-driven, flexible loafer), and maximize the material quality. It's the type of loafer I recommend if Edward Green shoes are around PS1000, but not if Crockett & Jones is less than PS500. Polishing is one way to show quality. Grand loafers can be polished to a mirror-like shine due to their tight-grained baby calves. They often polish their uppers to make them shine, even though they know that polish won't achieve the same effect. This is why you cannot polish the vamp of a shoe but can polish the heel or toe. This is Allan's most significant change to a regular loafer. To answer my question about whether the Grand is the same as the Sagan, I would probably say no. Although the Grand is more innovative, it is also subtle and technically sophisticated.
